01 · The call
Good with cautionWhy now
Giant Forest, foothill color, and lower-elevation forest stops are rewarding right now while the highest routes stay in shoulder season.
Watch out

giant forest guide
Sequoia National Park is easy to underrate if the plan treats it as a single tree stop.
Field notes
Narrow steep mountain roads. The roads in are narrow, winding, and steep; the Mineral King road is 25 miles of it and is not a good fit for RVs or trailers.
Bear-smart food storage. These bears are used to campgrounds and parking areas, so keep coolers and scented items out of view and locked away.
Rivers are swift, cold, and slick. The rivers here run fast and cold, and the rocks beside them are slippery.
