01 · The call
Good with cautionWhy now
Late spring through fall can open a clean window for experienced hikers once snow.
Watch out
Mt Baldy is Mount San Antonio, a major mountain objective.
Plan B
Lower canyon hike, village stop, or Angeles Crest scenic day — if summit conditions look wrong.
02 · The story

baldy objective guide

Field notes
Devil's Backbone is exposed and narrow. The Devil's Backbone is a narrow ridge with big drop-offs on both sides.
In winter this is mountaineering, not hiking. From late fall through spring and even early summer, Baldy can hold ice and needs mountaineering judgment.
